Asphalt May Be The Answer

When it comes to paving your driveway there are really only two options. You can either pave using concrete or asphalt. Some individuals try to stick with gravel, but this is not a good long term solution as the gravel can move and cause ruts in your driveway. However gravel is a good base for other types of paving. When you want to start paving you need to consider which material you would like to use, and if you have not considered asphalt here are a few different reasons to consider asphalt.

Durable

One of the main reasons that you should seriously consider asphalt is that it is very durable. Asphalt is made from limestone aggregate and bitumen, a petroleum product. The two mixed together create asphalt. The asphalt is mixed together to form a highly viscous fluid, and then it is pressed by a steamroller. The product which is commonly called "blacktop" is one of the most durable materials on the market. There is a reason that freeways and highways are both paved using asphalt. The asphalt is strong and even has a little bit of flex to it, so it is able to withstand heat and cold cycles.

Maintenance

Over a long period of time your asphalt may start to show signs of wear and tear, and this is completely normal. The good thing about asphalt is there are many low cost ways to maintain a asphalt slab. You can find asphalt sealant at almost every home improvement store, and if you put the sealant in the small cracks then you will extend the life of your asphalt slab. In fact, it is possible to completely refinish your asphalt pavement using a mixture that is mostly the bitumen. This allows you to keep the same asphalt without having to spend the money to completely replace the asphalt slab.

Recyclable

There are many reasons that asphalt is a great choice for your driveway, but one reason that is often overlooked is that asphalt is completely recyclable. There is a very good chance that the asphalt that you use to pave your driveway was used beforehand and was recycled. If you decide that it is time to rip up your asphalt slab then you can have your slab completely recycled. While reducing your carbon footprint may not be at the top of your list, it is a very good reason to choose asphalt for your pavement.
